1861 - an Australian in Brompton !

1861 Census for Brompton is now available on the Census page.

I was quite surprized to see a young visitor from Australia and a resident of 102 years old. Not quite Henry Jenkins, but a great age for 1861 !

To give some idea of what was going on outside of Brompton-on-Swale around April 7th, 1861 when the census was taken ...

  • March 17th - Italy had just been unified into a single country after the campaigns of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

  • April 16th - the American Civil War broke out the following week (April 16th, 1861).

  • Also that year, Charles Dicken's novel Great Expectations was published in book form

NOTE: For the geeks out there ... All the census transcriptions I've done so far (1841, 1851 and 1861) are now available for download in Comma Separated Value (CSV) format as well as Portable Document Format (PDF) format. CSV files can easily be loaded into spreadsheets (like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets)
